east & west

Last week Rome hosted a Liturgy Conference. The Catholic Church was broadly represented, that is, both the West (Latin or Roman Catholic that most readers of this blog are familiar with), and the Eastern Catholic Church.

In 1995 Pope John Paul issued the Apostolic Letter Orientale Lumen (Light of the East). Later in the same month (May 1995) he published an encyclical Ut Unum Sunt (That they may be one) in which he invited the Church to "breathe with both lungs". (par. 54)

At last week's conference one of the Cardinals present spoke about the need for more of the "mystery" (which is a visible feature of the Eastern Church) in the liturgy of the Western Church.

This three minute video would make a great starter reflection for a school or parish liturgy group.
