Sometimes people ask me what a day in the life of a North Canterbury Parish Priest is like. Well, every day is different, and today has been especially satisfying. It is difficult for many people who live in the city to appreciate how satisfying rural ministry can be for a priest.
At this time last night I was with the bishop and priests of our diocese for the annual Advent celebration of Reconciliation, and dinner. It is always good to be together. Last night our ten seminarians joined us as well. The dinner last night was especially relaxed since the company was very good.
Later last night I met with a friend for a beer, and our regular catch-up (usually in a pub) to chat about life and faith. This is always a welcome 'reality-check' and therefore an encounter with God.

Today I celebrated Mass with the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick with some of the sick and elderly of the Hurunui parishes at the Community of the Beatitudes Monastery in Leithfield. After the Mass we shared lunch together. Again, great company.
Tonight I have just arrived back home in Cheviot after celebrating Mass with Waiau parishioners at their beautiful little church. After Mass we had a picnic on the lawn in front of the Church.
