letter from a pope

On Christmas Day 2005, eight months after his election, Pope Benedict issued the encyclical letter "God is Love", the first of three such letters.

The letter was gentle and pastoral, with a depth and attractiveness that was both unexpected and welcome from the new pope.

Among the first sentences of the letter are these words, which sum not only the pontificate of Pope Benedict, but also the whole purpose of the Christian life and of human existence. For Pope Benedict, everything is about Jesus Christ.

"Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction."
